Welcome to the Department of
Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of South Carolina.
If you are interested in Graduate School at the University of
South Carolina, our Department is one of the best in the
Southeast, with world-class research programs in Analytical,
Biochemistry, Inorganic, Organic, and Physical Chemistry. We have
27 faculty, 35 postdoctoral and other researchers, 110 graduate
students, and 23 staff. Our success rate for Ph.D. students is
exceptional, and we are consistently listed as one of the top 30
programs in the country, based on Ph.D. productivity, by the
American Chemical Society. We have recently moved to a
158,000 square foot research building designed from the ground up
to be a world-class Chemistry facility.
If you are interested in our Undergraduate program, we’re proud
that we were one of three undergraduate Chemistry programs in
South Carolina that was recognized for its excellence by the
Commission on Higher Education. The faculty here are easily
accessible and interested in the education of our students.
Chemistry is a wonderful profession. Its diversity offers a
challenge for everyone and provides an unexcelled opportunity to
solve significant problems. Chemists are in demand in industry,
government, and academic labs. Salaries for entry-level Ph.D.
students, M.S. students, and B.S. students exceeded $64,000,
$45,000 and $34,000/year in 2003. B.S. Chemists averaged a 25%
increase in pay after three years of work.
Please look through the web site. We hope you get a feel for the
ongoing activity here, in research and in education.
