Preliminary Application
 

Thank you for your interest in graduate study in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of South Carolina.  This page details exactly what is needed to apply.  On the right are the four items you will need to provide us with (five items if you are an international applicant).  There is no fee for the preliminary application for support

Test scores, transcripts and recommendations sent to us for the preliminary application will be forwarded to the Graduate School and do not need to be submitted twice.  After the department considers your preliminary application, you are encouraged to apply to the Graduate School.

1. Preliminary Application

To submit a preliminary application for admission please fill out our electronic form.  When you are done filling out the form, click the submit button at the bottom of the page only once.  You will receive an email indicating that we have received your preliminary application has been submitted.


2. Letters of Recommendation

Please submit two or three letters of recommendation from faculty that are familiar with your academic work. If you have done a research project, your supervisor’s letter is especially useful.

Click here to download the letter of recommendation form. Print copies of this form for use by the professors you select to send recommendations. Please have the recommenders send the letters to:

3. GRE Scores

Please submit your GRE Scores to the Department.  We will accept either official scores sent to us by the testing agency or copies of the scores that you received. Copies are appreciated and will speed the application process.  If you are accepted by the Department, the Graduate School will require GRE scores from all applicants. They require that official GRE scores be sent directly from ETS.

4. Official Transcripts

The department requires official transcripts from each university or college that you have attended.  Please send your transcripts to:

If you are admitted to the graduate program in Chemistry and Biochemistry, you will be asked to provide a final transcript indicating degree completion.  That transcript is to be sent to the same address.

If you are not an international applicant, you are finished applying once steps 1 through 4 are completed.  So what's next?


5. TOEFL Scores

If you are an international applicant from a country whose primary language is not English, you must take the TOEFL. The University of South Carolina requires a score of at least 570 paper-based/230 computer-based for admission to the university. If you have a degree from an American College or University, the TOEFL is not required. We will accept either official scores sent to us by the testing agency or copies of the scores that you received. Copies are appreciated and will speed the application process.  If you are accepted to the Department, the Graduate School will require official TOEFL scores sent directly from ETS.
