Occupational exposure to hazardous chemicals
in laboratories. Regulations (Standards
- 29 CFR)- 1910.1450 (U.S. Department of
Labor, Occupational Safety & Health
Administration) [Last accessed: 22 March
2006].
New
USC
policy for decommissioning of laboratories.
This policy is applicable to all laboratories
and auxiliary spaces serving as laboratories.
It provides measures for the removal of
hazards from laboratory spaces when the
principal investigator (PI) is: leaving
the University of South Carolina, moving
to another building on campus, or relocating
to another laboratory within the same building.
The OSHA laboratory standard (see link
above) requires that all individuals working
in laboratories attend laboratory safety
training and hazardous waster training.
Classes are held at the start of each semester
or at the beginning of the summer; USC Environmental
Health & Safety also conducts classes
at periodic intervals.
Click above for information and policies
concerning the transport of hazardous materials
from the Chemistry & Biochemistry Department
Stockroom by purchasers from other departments.
Chemical hygiene plan
Every laboratory is required to have a
chemical hygiene plan. Laboratory and research
directors are reminded that new individuals
working in their laboratories must sign
on the appropriate page of the Chemical
Hygiene Plan acknowledging that they have
read the chemical hygiene plan.
[ WORD ] [
PDF ] — Download copies of the
USC Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry
Chemical Hygiene Plan (Microsoft Word
and Adobe Acrobat PDF formats).
These documents are designed to be printed
double-sided. Note that the document is
paginated with gutter margins as a double
sided document. It is best to print it on
a printer capable of double-sided printing
or print a single-sided copy and run off
a double-sided version on a copier. Please
submit any revisions for this plan to Dr.
Morgan.
If your laboratory works with any of
the following hazardous materials, you should
print and include these manuals as addenda
to your chemical hygiene plan:
USC
Biological Safety — Information
on biological safety policies and procedures
of University of South Carolina for users
of biohazardous materials, including the
USC
Biological Safety Manual. Other information
on biosafety can be found on the Centers
for Disease Control site. Click here
to download the CDC manual on "Biosafety
in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories
(BMBL), 4th edition.
Infectious
Waste Disposal — Infectious waste
disposal information. For pickup of such
waste, please send an email to Patty
Hamilton of USC EH&S. Include "Biosafety
Waste Pickup" in the subject line.
USC
Blood Borne Pathogen Exposure Control Plan
— USC's Blood Borne Pathogens Exposure
Protocol is located in Appendix G of the
Blood Borne Pathogens Exposure Control Plan.
for the on-line blood borne pathogen training.
Radiation
safety information is available on the
USC EH&S site. If you have any questions
about radioactive materials and protocols,
you might want to check with Hanno
Zur Loye, chair of the USC Radiation
Safety Committee.
Hazardous
waste information is available on the
USC EH&S site. Chemical
spill clean-up procedures and information
on recycling chemicals is also available.
To request a waste pickup, complete an online
form detailing the basic information
needed for the USC Hazardous Waste Team
to collect wastes from your laboratories/workspaces
and be prepared with needed supplies. For
other information such as obtaining supplies,
tags, or labels, send email to Hazwaste@gwm.sc.edu
or call 777-5269.
Laboratory hazard information notices
Each laboratory must have a hazard information notice posted on the entrance door to assist emergency responders in the event of an incident in the laboratory. This notice must be updated semiannually.
Two notices are available for your convenience that can be downloaded and printed on a 8.5" x 14" "goldenrod" or yellow paper. A standard notice in Adobe can be downloaded and completed. The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry has developed a template for hazard information notices in Word format. Please send a copy of your information notice as it is updated to Patty Hamilton.
